From Jay Hess, M.D., Ph.D., M.H.S.A.
Dean, IU School of Medicine
Vice President for University Clinical Affairs, Indiana University
Thank you for your interest in the Indiana University School of Medicine. We are currently the second largest medical school in the country with nine education campuses across the state. We offer an unusually rich environment for students through our affiliations with a number of health systems including IU Health, which offers a full range of health services and is currently ranked amongst the top 1% of healthcare systems by the US News and World Report and a number of other health systems associated with each of our regional campuses.
Students have the opportunity to train in a variety of settings including tertiary care centers such as in Indianapolis, in community hospitals and and in a variety of ambulatory care settings. The school also offers students opportunities to work in student-run clinics, in its internationally recognized AMPATH program in Kenya and in other locations across the world where academic affiliations have been established. The School of Medicine puts great emphasis on our education programs and was a pioneer in introducing competency-based learning in the medical student curriculum.
We also offer a number of dual degree programs including MD-JD, MD-MA in Bioethics, MD-MPH, MD-MBA, MD-MS in Global Health and in Translational Science and of course, MD-Ph.D, programs. Our research programs are nationally recognized in a number of areas including cancer, transplantation, alcoholism, bone and stem cell biology as well as health outcomes research. Through our close affiliations with the Schools of Dentistry, Nursing, Public Health, Social Work, Rehabilitation Sciences, Optometry, the Purdue School of Pharmacy and the Regenstrief Institute, IUSM is well poised to be one of the nation’s leaders in the rapidly evolving field of population health management.
We take great pride in our students as they develop into compassionate professionals, who we would entrust with our own care, and who are committed to making healthcare better. I hope that we have the opportunity to share that journey from student to healer with you.
From Peter Nalin, MD
